Palmers Shipbuilding Company
In late 1851 brothers Charles, Mark and George Palmer set up a shipbuilding business called Palmers Shipbuilding and Iron Company Limited,. It is also known locally as 'Palmers' where almost 1000 ships were launched into the River Tyne.
The business was on the site of Simon Temple, a yard that had
previously built wooden Warships for the Royal Navy.
As a result Jarrow grew in size and population to support Palmers workforce requirements. By the early 1900s Palmers was employing up to 10,000 people!
