Transport links into Jarrow during this time were very poor, and the need for workers to be within reliable distance of the shipyard meant many workers lived in nearby terraced houses.
These terraced buildings were poorly lit, cramped houses and could be found through-out Jarrow. Years later in the 50s and 60s these houses were demolished and were replaced with modern houses.
